Hawthorn Tincture
1:2 Strength
A 1:2 strength tincture of fresh, organic Hawthorn flowers and berries (haws).
Hawthorn is known by herbalists as the ‘heart herb’. It has been used since the Middle Ages and today research has shown it to be beneficial for heart health, blood flow and blood pressure. We use the flowers as well as the berries, because the flowers contain trimethylamine, which stimulates circulation.
Our tinctures are packaged in blue glass bottles with pipette lids, so drops are easily dispensed.

Information
A tincture is a concentrated herbal extract made using ethanol and distilled water. When glycerine is used in place of the ethanol, it is called a glycerite. The ethanol acts as a solvent, drawing out the active compounds from the herb into the liquid. A fluid extract is more concentrated than a tincture, usually a 1:1 ratio of herb to menstruum.
The ratio refers to the concentration of herbs to solvent, for example 1:3 would be 1 part herbs (grams) to 3 parts liquid (millilitres). 1:1 is the strongest extract, in which 1ml of liquid is the extracted equivalent of 1000mg of herb.
The percentage of a tincture refers to the alcohol used. 45% means that the ethanol was diluted to 45% with 55% distilled water.
The tincture should also clarify whether dried or fresh herbs were used.
Usually between a few drops and a few ml of tincture are taken daily by mouth, either straight or diluted in water.
