For many, the problem of erectile dysfunction (ED) is a temporary blip in an otherwise fulfilling sex life, but for some it can be more long term, resulting in distress and even depression. Looking on the bright side, there are some very effective remedies out there. So let’s get to grips with the question of Viagra versus other alternatives.
Viagra is a licensed pharmaceutical medicine used to treat ED and impotence. Its active ingredient is sildenafil, supplied in doses ranging from 25mg to 100 mg per tablet. There are other licensed drugs available, and like Viagra, they are known as phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE-5). The brand names of these products are Cialis (tadalafil) and Levitra (vardenafil), and Spedra (avanafil).
It is important to note that PDE-5 inhibitors are not suitable to be taken if you are on nitrate medications or recreational drugs, The combination of the two substances can have a dangerous effect on your heart. You will need to check and discuss alternative choices of ED medication with your GP.
A useful guide to when a drug should not be used and possible side effects of PDE-5 inhibitors have been published by NHS Choices
It helps to increase the blood flow to the penis so that during sexual arousal or stimulation an erection can be achieved and maintained during intercourse. One point worth noting is that it will not produce an erection without other forms of sexual stimulation.
It would seem to vary from person to person, but in two double-blind trials, the effects of Viagra were found to give a penetrative erection 12-30 minutes after taking the dose. It then provided an active duration of at least 4 hours – potentially, rather than continuously!
For more senior users, the effects of Viagra are likely to last longer due to a slower metabolism, proving that there are a few upsides to those advancing years.
One tablet should be taken within a 24-hour period but your GP will advise. An important point worth noting is that Viagra will take longer to work if taken on a full stomach. If you wait for an hour after taking the tablet before tucking into steak and chips, the time taken for the drug to become active will be unaffected.
Herbal alternatives to modern medicine are seen as a natural and healthy solution to a variety of medical issues. This is the same when it comes to Viagra. Different types of herbal extracts from other continents and civilisations have long been passed down through the ages as magical cures where nocturnal native action was concerned. It is these stories that have inspired and persuaded people to try a variety of herbal alternatives.
We have compiled an extensive list of all the herbal extracts believed to have similar properties to Viagra. Herbs, plants and mushrooms from China, Malaysia and the Amazon have all made the list. It certainly makes for an interesting read and can be found here – The Best Herbal Viagra Alternatives
NOTE:
The National Institute of Medical Herbalists state:
NIMH members are aware of the importance of medicines being sourced from reputable manufacturers who maintain consistent quality standards. Traceability (right back to the original batch of herbs) and certificates of authenticity are key ways in which quality is maintained. Sustainability is also of crucial importance.
In the UK, legal herbal remedies show either the THR (traditional herbal registration) logo or the product licence on the label. You should check for this when making your choice. It is important to purchase herbal products from a company who places the provenance of its products high on its list of priorities.
Where ED is due to stress, depression or anxiety, your GP will refer you to an experienced counsellor or sex therapist.
Stopping smoking, losing weight, cutting back on alcohol and taking regular exercise are incredibly powerful and positive lifestyle changes. Any or all of these will help your overall health hugely and will certainly help with correction of ED.
This is sometimes used to achieve an erection and 90% of men report success after using this method. However, it is sometimes possible that the vacuum pump may result in bruising.
Is a drug which is injected directly into the penis. This has an 85% success rate among those prepared to inject themselves. This option tends not to be a first-line preference in Viagra alternatives.
A permanent solution is a penis implant which is a semi-rigid or inflatable device inserted into the penis. You may be interested to note that this surgical procedure is not available on the NHS.
In all honesty, this is a question only you can answer.
It is a trial and error process and very much has to take into consideration your personal circumstances and your lifestyle choices. From a convenience perspective the herbal alternatives, normally in a tablet or capsule form are by far the simplest and best option. It is just a matter of taking the recommended dosage when the moment requires it. But, we stress it again, there is no one solution fits all.
Healthy and safe Viagra substitutes, as recommended by your doctor should be explored until YOU find an option that suits YOU.
